Dawn DeSart is a true “public servant” from our community, and for our community. A graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Dawn is now an elected member of the Indian Prairie School District 204 Board of Education. A fiscal conservative on the school board, Dawn has led the charge to implement workable solutions to reduce local government spending. While protecting the high quality of education our children deserve, Dawn helped the school district cut nearly $9.5 million to balance the budget.
As a leader in our community, Dawn is committed to transparency in government, listening to her constituents, and fiscal responsibility. On the school board, Dawn helped adopt a computer program to allow the public to view all the information that previously only board members received. Dawn is committed to bringing citizens into the conversation of government and has championed the school district’s “24-hour Rule,” requiring the district to respond to any concerns from students, parents and residents within 24 hours.
A former news journalist, Dawn is committed to listening to people’s concerns and will work to ensure government operates in a clean and transparent manner. As a news anchor with Chicago’s NBC5, Dawn earned five Emmys for excellence in broadcasting and used her success to bring attention and resources to local charities in our area and served on the Board of the Fox Valley United Way. Currently, Dawn is a full-time mother of two and active volunteer with the schools, Girl Scouts, church, and community organizations to feed the hungry.
Dawn spent many summers as her church’s Vacation Church School director, serving up to 450 children each year. She has been a Sunday School teacher; a First Communion instructor; organized an eight week “Love and Marriage” seminar at Alleluia for couples in need of mending their relationship; and is a Stephen Minister, helping people going through personal crisis, on a one-on-one basis. She has also served as President of the Little Blessings Preschool Board of Directors.
